The Grimm Brothers

The Grimm Brothers are probably the most well-known collectors/writers of stories. They were 19th-century academics who were interested in language and culture and were part of a movement that sought to collect folklore. Many others followed in their footsteps in other parts of Europe. Collecting folklore, specifically the oral traditional stories, was one way of making a claim for cultural national unity.

The Grimm Brothers produced collections of what they termed “märchen“, perhaps best translated as “wonder tale.” Grimm’s Fairy Tales was originally known as Children and Household Tales. The first edition, in 1812, contained 86 stories; ta second volume of 70 stories followed in 1815. Over the next years, until the seventh edition of 1857, the brothers added and subtracted stories, and rewrote many of them with an eye toward improving their suitability for children and increasing their suitability in terms of the values of 19th-century German-speaking middle-class societies. This often took the form of removing sexually explicit material, though not violence.

As part of our work on fairy tales, you are choosing one story to work on in-depth, looking at many variations, so you may, for example, find it interesting to look at a story fro the Grimm Brothers’ from the 1812 publication and compare it to that of 1857. And then to see how it is retold again and again.

This particular story, perhaps unsurprisingly, is often not included in later works of the Edwardian period intended directly for children. Not that the stories didn’t have their disturbing and strange moments. Look at this example of “The Goose Girl” retold in Grimm’s Fairy Tales Retold in One-Syllable Words, published in 1899 by McLoughlin Brothers featuring the head of a horse talking.

From these literary versions of the stories, I notice a lot of violent scenes, and actions questioning the moral and human conscience (which I am surprised&shocked). In addition, there are also magical or fantastical elements in the stories. For example, the boy from Juniper Tree became a bird and sang after he was cooked, then came back alive after killing his stepmother. The horse in the Goose Girl can talk and the girl is able to get things the way she wants with her chant/singing. In addition, cannibalism is also really common, according to the first and last story.

From these literary versions of stories, I have noticed a lot of bloody and violent scenes that would not appear in today’s fairy tales. It’s kind of shocking for me to see such things happen in a fairy tale. Another thing I’ve noticed is the magical settings in these stories. In the first story, the boy becomes a bird (who can sing and talk like a human) and comes back for revenge after his death. In the second story, the horse that can speak and the princess who can sing make things happen in the way she want.

What I notice from the stories is there are alot of violence going on and alot of death. I didn’t expect that because when we think about fairy tale we think the story will make our mood happy. Today fair tale create magic . The story of the Jupiter the little boy got killed and eaten. Know stories there are no killing or hurting other

What I have noticed from these stories is there is a lot of violence going on. When reading the stories I didn’t expected any death or cannibalism , this is something i don’t expect from a fairytale story. The story of The Jupiter tree definitely surprised me becuase I didn’t expect a little boy to be kill and eaten. There are also elements of magic in the magic in the story i did suspect such as transforming in a animal or speaking to animals.

What surprised me the most was in the story of Sleeping Beauty how this version is totally different from the one Disney gives us. This version talks more about how Sleeping Beauty was raped and was not awakened by a love kiss. We also see details in which that “true love” was not a single prince, but rather a married King. The queen, his wife, has serious jealousy problems, that she is capable of kill babies to feed her husband as punishment. Definitely the stories from before were much crueler than those from modern times. Maybe, I could imagine that stories like this were told before because in those times people were more crude towards violence. In our society, having thoughts or behaviors are more scandalized. That is why Disney has chosen to change most of the stories and bring a little more “Innocence” and “Happiness” to these new generations.
