Myths as Foundations

As we discussed in class, Greek theatre drew from the world of oral storytelling and the mythic tradition. Myths were very important to the creators of literary fairy tales.

Next, we’ll take a look at one myth that has been particularly important in the world of performance because of the way in which it centers on music.

MODERN DAY MYTH RETELLING

One of the most recent retellings of the Orpheus story is currently taking place on Broadway in Hadestown which also adds in elements of the myth of Persephone and Hades.

If you are interested in learning more about myths and how myths are studied I recommend the following optional video and many of the other videos from the Crash Course: World Mythology playlist.

Are there elements from any of the three myths you read, or saw in the video, in fairy tales you know? How would you define the difference between a myth and a folk story or fairy tale at this stage?

As an individual with little familiarity with mythology, I posit that a potential parallel to the tale of Cupid and Psyche may be found in the narrative of Cinderella. That is primarily due to a love affair prohibited or undesired by certain parties involved. In my opinion, folktales may be defined as narrative accounts whereby human individuals serve as the central protagonists, sometimes including acts of heroism. Myths are a kind of storytelling that explains many aspects of our world, including its origins and the underlying causes behind natural phenomena such as seasonal changes.

Cupid and Psyche really reminded me of Pandora’s box, the idea of curiosity having negative impacts was very apparent. I did like the fact that it had a happy ending though. Im also a polysci major so the idea of the American Dream being an example of myths was super interesting to me and inspired some other research.

Myth: Myths are special kinds of stories that usually involve gods, how the world works, or deep meaning.

Folk Story: Folk Stories are fictional stories that have been passed down from generation to generation as entertainment. Folk Stories are not considered truthful.

Fairy Tale: Fairy Tales are fictional stories as well but involve happy endings, magic, talking animals, goblins, etc.

The Cupid and Psyche remind me of Beauty and the Beast and the Little Mermaid, with a being falling in love with humans. Myth is a story about the creation of the world or universe and the origin of the things that exist today. A fairytale is a story that focuses on the protagonist’s happy ending with some lessons and messages shared. In my opinion, folktales may have a little connection with Myth but with characters that are not focusing on God or heroes. Folktale also talks about the origin of things in the world and messages that are significant for a human being.

The story of Cupid and psyche reminded me of the story of beauty and the beast. They both have the story of one of the characters hiding their true identity. For a Myth it can be defined as a fictionalized version of an ancient legend.Myths were frequently written to explain natural phenomena and frequently featured gods and fictitious beings. A fairy tale can be defined as stories that involve magical beings and magic. They usually end with a happy ending. A folk tale can be defined as a story that gets passed from generations to generations. They usually involve some sort of moral lesson.
